Can You Drink a Unicorn?

You probably heard about the new Starbucks drink called the Unicorn Frappuccino. It’s been making international news and the Washington Post described it as this:

“Starbucks’s Unicorn Frappuccino tastes like sour birthday cake mixed with a creamsicle covered in Pixie Stix and a healthy sprinkling of despair.”

That’s quite descriptive, eh?

The drink is pink and blue and covered with whipped crème and sprinkles. According to Starbuck’s website, a 16oz size has 59 grams of sugar.

So naturally my colleagues are freaking out.

Some of them are lambasting Starbucks and saying things like:

  • How could you?
  • This drink is poison!
  • This is insane and reckless!

Then there are the more chill colleagues who say things like:

  • Eh, drink it if you want.
  • It’s okay to have a treat.
  • Everything in balance.

I’ve had a few clients ask me what my thoughts are on this magical drink so here they are.

I say that your decision to drink it or not should be based on…

… YOU.

Ok, lame answer, right?

Hear me out.

If you’re just starting your weight loss journey and have only been eating well for a few days or a couple of weeks… then skip the Unicorn. It’ll be too tempting and remind you of just what sugar tasted like.

Right now you need to stay focused on your goals and your new lifestyle. Don’t worry – there will be another drink at another time that you can enjoy.

If you’re at your weight loss goals and are in maintenance mode, then go ahead and order the drink if you want it. I don’t recommend drinking the whole thing. But order it and have a quarter of it or half of it. Only do this if you have a track record of being able to have a treat and not fall off the wagon.

Part of being healthy and fit is knowing when you can have a treat and when you can’t. It’s about knowing your own body, that you can order something and not derail your entire program and that right now isn’t a good time to test yourself.

It’s about knowing you.

So whether you drink a Unicorn or not… know that what I think is only part of the equation. What you think and what you’re capable of doing is more important.

If you cannot trust yourself to make the right decision… then don’t have it. Not trusting yourself is a sign that you’re not yet “strong” enough to handle a Unicorn treat.

Trust comes from making the right decisions over and over again.

I believe eating well and being active is a lifelong journey. If any plan forces you to take an extreme position then it won’t work for the long-haul.

What will work is empowering yourself to make your own decisions based on what is best for your goals – a healthy body and mind.
